Paralela Architecture and Arts : Gaudi, here? (2016)
Paralela Arquitetura e Artes : Além de Gaudi, aqui?

Curator and Creative Director, Design Leader
Cultural Event and Architectural Exhibitions Event

The first edition of Paralela, in circuit format, took place between September 10 and October 30, 2016. The goal of the event was to expose and promote the production of young collectives and architecture and arts offices in Florianópolis, promoting spaces for exchanges and discussions. The event took place in parallel to the exhibition “Gaudi, Barcelona 1900”, which took place at the Museum of Art of Santa Catarina (MASC) organized by the Tomie Ohtake institute (São Paulo).

The main idea of the curatorial team was to promote an aesthetic and ethical debate in relation to the exhibition “Gaudi, Barcelona 1900”, the work of the Catalan architect and the artistic and architectural correlates that enunciate the symbolic and fantastic in local architecture. In its aesthetic relationship, the aim was to bring the public closer to the local architectural production that explores Catholic symbolism, non-traditional forms and the technical influence of iron and glass architecture. In this axis, educational actions and exhibitions were set up by different actors, from architecture offices to local craftsmen. In the area of ethical relations, a critical debate was held on the impact of major exhibitions on the economy and the local art circuit. At the time, the exhibition, which toured more than 8 Brazilian capitals, was financed with resources from public-private partnerships, but did not include any activity or space dedicated to the influence of Catalan work, or the expressiveness of Catalan modernism and art-nouveau in the places where it toured. Thus, “Beyond Gaudì, here” is an invitation both to take a close look at local production and to take a critical look at the effects of the art circuit.

In all, the first edition of Paralela was self-financed and encompassed a total of 9 free actions and a closing event, covering 7 neighborhoods on the island of Florianópolis, proposed by 13 entities (autonomous artists, designers and architects; and architecture offices and collectives), in an estimated audience of 2000 people.
